Glossary Term

GS1 Databar

A compact barcode family often used for small items or products that require extra data like weight and expiration dates.

The Solution for Small Spaces

Standard UPC barcodes are great, but they are too big for small items like a single apple or a tube of lipstick. GS1 Databar is a family of smaller, high-density barcodes designed specifically for these tight spots. It packs a lot of information into a very tiny footprint.

Dynamic Data for Fresh Products

Unlike a regular barcode that only identifies the product, some versions of GS1 Databar can hold extra data. This is huge for fresh food. It can store the weight of the item and its expiration date, allowing the register to automatically calculate the price and check if the product is still safe to sell.

  • Much smaller than standard UPC-A barcodes.
  • Can hold serial numbers and lot numbers.
  • Commonly used for manufacturer coupons.

Global Scanning Standards

Since 2014, GS1 Databar has been a global standard for retail. This means almost every modern scanner at Walmart or Amazon can read it perfectly. It helps prevent 'unscannable' items at checkout, which keeps the lines moving and the customers happy.

Why It Matters for Inventory

Because it can carry lot numbers and batch info, it makes inventory tracking much more precise. If there is a quality issue with a specific batch, you can identify exactly which items need to be pulled from the shelf without wasting the rest of your stock.
