PDF417

A stacked, two-dimensional barcode capable of holding large amounts of data, often used on shipping labels and ID cards.

More Than Just a Link

PDF417 is a 'stacked' 2D barcode. It looks like a bunch of tiny barcodes piled on top of each other. Unlike simple barcodes that just hold a number, PDF417 can hold a lot of text. It's actually a portable data file””that's where the 'PDF' in the name comes from!

The Choice for Carriers

If you look at a FedEx or USPS shipping label, you will likely see a PDF417 code. Carriers love it because it can store the entire shipping address, the service level, and tracking details inside the code itself. If their internet goes down, the scanner can still read all the info directly from the label.

  • Can store over 1,100 bytes of data.
  • Very secure and hard to fake.
  • Used on US driver's licenses and boarding passes.

Error Correction: Smart Scanning

One of the best things about PDF417 is its error correction. Even if part of the barcode is torn, wet, or scratched, the scanner can often still reconstruct the missing data. This makes it perfect for shipping boxes that might get roughed up during travel.

Printing Requirements

Because it’s a complex code, you need a decent resolution printer (200 DPI minimum, 300 DPI preferred). If the print is too dark or too light, the tiny rows will blur together and become unreadable. Always check your printer's darkness settings before printing batches of these.
