Glossary Term

HS Code (Harmonized System)

An internationally standardized system of names and numbers to classify traded products for customs purposes.

The Passport for Your Products

Every product shipped internationally needs an HS Code. This 6 to 10-digit number tells customs officers exactly what is inside your box and what duty rate should be applied. Using the wrong HS Code can lead to overpaying in taxes or having your shipment seized by customs for misclassification.

HS Codes and Your Commercial Invoice

The HS Code must be printed on your commercial invoice and often on the shipping marks of your master cartons. For Amazon sellers importing from overseas, getting the HS Code right is a key part of calculating your final "Landed Cost."

  • Standardized globally for over 200 countries.
  • Determines the legality and duty rate of your shipment.
  • Essential for freight forwarders and customs brokers.
