Glossary Term
MSKU (Merchant Stock Keeping Unit)
A unique alphanumeric identifier assigned by the seller to a specific product variation to track inventory internally within Seller Central.
Your Internal Naming System
While Amazon assigns the ASIN and FNSKU, you choose the MSKU. A smart seller uses a descriptive MSKU like "GARLIC-PRESS-STAINLESS-V01." This helps you identify exactly what the item is just by looking at a report, without having to look up an ASIN.
The Power of MSKU on Labels
Adding your MSKU to your product labels is a massive help for warehouse staff. When they see the MSKU on the sticker, they know exactly which shelf it belongs to. By default, Amazon doesn’t always put the MSKU on the FNSKU label, but with a custom tool, you can add it as "Free Text."
- Unique to every seller and every variation.
- Permanent once the SKU is created in Amazon.
- Best practice: Include supplier and date info in the SKU string.
